    English Translation

Sometimes, on the banks of the Yamuna, in the forest groves, He creates melodious music. He is like a bumblebee tasting the lotus-like faces of the joyful Gopi women. His feet are worshipped by Lakshmi, Shiva, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesha. May that Lord Jagannath be the object of my vision. (1) In His left hand, He holds a flute; on His head, He wears peacock feathers; on His hips, fine silken cloth. From the corners of His eyes, He casts sidelong glances at His companions. Always revealing His pastimes in the divine abode of Vrindavan, May that Lord Jagannath be the object of my vision. (2) Residing on the shore of the great ocean, on the beautiful golden Nilachala Hill, within the temple. He is accompanied by His powerful brother Balabhadra, with Subhadra in the middle. He grants the opportunity for service to all demigods. May that Lord Jagannath be the object of my vision. (3) He is an ocean of mercy, beautiful like a row of dark rain clouds. He is the source of joy for Lakshmi and Saraswati, His face like a spotless, fully bloomed lotus. He is worshipped by the best of demigods, and His glories are sung by the Upanishads. May that Lord Jagannath be the object of my vision. (4) As He rides on His chariot, proceeding along the path, He compassionately listens at every step. To the outpouring of praises from the assembled Brahmanas. He is an ocean of compassion, the friend of all worlds, accompanied by the daughter of the ocean (Lakshmi). May that Lord Jagannath be the object of my vision. (5) He is the crown jewel of the Supreme Brahman, His eyes wide like fully bloomed blue lotus petals. Residing on Nilachala, His feet placed on the head of Ananta (Shesha). He is immersed in the bliss of divine love, a companion in embracing Radha's loving form. May that Lord Jagannath be the object of my vision. (6) I do not pray for a kingdom, nor for gold, jewels, or wealth. Nor do I ask for a beautiful wife desired by all people. My only prayer is that Sri Jagannathadeva, whose splendid glories are always sung by Shiva, Be the constant object of my vision. (7) O Lord of the demigods, quickly remove this worthless worldly existence. O Lord of the Yadus, destroy this boundless multitude of my sins. Ah, He has surely placed His unwavering feet upon the fallen and the shelterless. May that Lord Jagannath be the object of my vision. (8) The virtuous and pure soul who recites this sacred Jagannathastakam. Becomes cleansed of all sins and attains the abode of Vishnu. (9)

The translation aims for a literal yet poetic rendition of the Sanskrit, preserving the devotional sentiment and imagery. Special attention is given to maintaining stanza breaks.

    🧾 Contributor Notes

The Śrī Jagannāthāṣṭakam is a revered Sanskrit devotional hymn composed by the illustrious 8th-century CE philosopher and theologian, Adi Shankaracharya. Shankaracharya, the principal exponent of the Advaita Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy, is celebrated for his extensive travels across India, establishing monastic centers (mathas) and composing numerous hymns (stotrams) to various deities, thereby revitalizing the Sanatana Dharma. He visited Puri, Odisha, where he established the Govardhan Math, one of the four cardinal monastic institutions. It is during this visit that he is believed to have composed the Jagannathastakam, expressing his profound devotion to Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Puri. The hymn beautifully describes Lord Jagannath's divine attributes, his pastimes in Vrindavan, and his majestic presence in Puri, often associating him with Krishna. Culturally, the Jagannathastakam holds immense significance, particularly in Odisha and among Vaishnava traditions worldwide. It is regularly recited as part of daily prayers and during major festivals associated with Lord Jagannath, such as the world-famous Ratha Yatra (Chariot Festival), Snana Yatra (Bathing Festival), and Chandana Yatra. The hymn encapsulates the essence of Bhakti (devotion) and surrender, emphasizing the Lord's mercy and his role as the remover of sins and bestower of liberation. Its recitation is believed to purify the heart and lead the devotee to Vishnuloka, the abode of Lord Vishnu. In terms of performance, the Jagannathastakam is primarily a chanted or sung hymn. It is commonly recited individually by devotees during their personal worship or collectively in temples and spiritual gatherings. While no specific instruments are strictly mandated, it can be accompanied by traditional Indian instruments like harmonium, tabla, and kartals in a kirtan or bhajan style. The hymn's melodic structure lends itself to various devotional singing styles, making it accessible to a wide audience. It is a staple in the devotional repertoire of many Hindu traditions, especially those with a strong connection to Lord Jagannath, such as the Gaudiya Vaishnavas, who revere Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's ecstatic recitation of this very hymn. Today, the Jagannathastakam continues to be a cornerstone of devotional practice, symbolizing the enduring spiritual legacy of Adi Shankaracharya and the timeless appeal of Lord Jagannath. Its verses offer a profound meditation on the divine, fostering a sense of connection, peace, and spiritual aspiration. Efforts for its preservation involve its continued teaching, recitation in temples, publication in devotional literature, and digital archiving, ensuring that future generations can access and benefit from this sacred composition. It remains a powerful expression of devotion, transcending sectarian boundaries and uniting devotees in their love for the Lord of the Universe.

(Hindi)
