    English Translation

I bow to Ishana, whose form is liberation, Omnipresent, all-pervading, the embodiment of Brahman and the Vedas. Self-existent, beyond attributes, without change, without desire, Dwelling in the consciousness-sky, residing in the sky, I worship Him. Formless, the root of Omkara, the fourth state (Turiya), Beyond speech, knowledge, and senses, the Lord, the Lord of mountains (Kailash). Fierce, the destroyer of even Mahakala (Time), compassionate, The abode of virtues, beyond the cycle of transmigration, I bow to Him. White as the snow-capped mountains, profound, Whose body shines with the splendor of millions of Cupids. From whose flowing matted hair emerges the beautiful Ganga, A crescent moon adorns His forehead, and a serpent coils around His neck. With moving earrings, beautiful eyebrows, and large eyes, A cheerful face, blue-throated, and compassionate. Clad in tiger skin, wearing a garland of skulls, I worship the beloved Shankara, the Lord of all. Fierce, supreme, powerful, the ultimate Lord, Indivisible, unborn, radiant as millions of suns. The remover of the three-fold suffering, holding a trident in hand, I worship the husband of Bhavani (Parvati), who is attained through devotion. Beyond time, auspicious, the cause of cosmic dissolution, Always bestowing joy upon the virtuous, the destroyer of Tripura. The essence of consciousness and bliss, the remover of delusion, Be pleased, be pleased, O Lord, the foe of Kama (Manmatha). As long as people in this world or the next do not worship The lotus feet of Uma's Lord (Shiva), Until then, they do not attain happiness, peace, or the destruction of suffering. Be pleased, O Lord, who dwells in the hearts of all beings. I know neither Yoga, nor Japa, nor Puja (worship), I always, at all times, bow to You, O Shambhu. Suffering greatly from the torrent of old age, birth, and sorrow, O Lord, protect me, the distressed one, O Ishana Shambhu. This Rudrashtakam has been spoken by a Brahmin to please Hara (Shiva). Those who recite it with devotion, Shambhu (Shiva) is pleased with them.

The translation aims for faithfulness to the Sanskrit original, preserving the devotional tone and philosophical depth. Key Shiva attributes and epithets are retained or explained for clarity.

    🧾 Contributor Notes

The Rudrashtakam (literally, 'octet to Rudra') is a revered Sanskrit devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, an epithet of Rudra. It was composed by the illustrious Hindu Bhakti poet Goswami Tulsidas in the late 15th or early 16th century AD in what is now Uttar Pradesh, India. This profound stotra is a significant part of his magnum opus, the Ramcharitmanas, specifically appearing in the Uttara Kand (the seventh and final book). Within the narrative of the Ramcharitmanas, the hymn is traditionally attributed to Sage Lomasha, who composed it to appease Lord Shiva, either to invoke his divine energy or to free his favorite disciple, Kakbhushundi, from a curse. Another tradition suggests Lord Rama himself sang it to seek Shiva's blessings before his battle with Ravana. Culturally, Rudrashtakam holds immense significance for Shaivites and Hindus across various traditions. It is chanted to express deep reverence for Lord Shiva, to seek his blessings, and to attain spiritual purification and liberation. The hymn is believed to remove worldly attachments, cleanse the soul, strengthen the mind, and provide protection from negativity and suffering. Its recitation is particularly potent during major Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva, such as Mahashivaratri and the holy month of Shravan, where devotees often chant it throughout the night or as part of daily pujas and abhishekam rituals. It is also incorporated into Rudra Yagnas, seeking divine intervention for health, prosperity, and well-being. The performance context of Rudrashtakam is primarily devotional and meditative. It is typically sung or recited individually or in congregational settings, often without specific musical instruments, allowing for a focus on the lyrics and their spiritual meaning. However, it can also be accompanied by traditional Indian instruments like harmonium, tabla, and cymbals in kirtan or bhajan settings. Devotees often recite it in temples, at home altars, or during spiritual gatherings. The rhythmic chanting is believed to regulate breathing and enhance focus, contributing to both spiritual and physical well-being. The emphasis is on sincere devotion (bhakti) and understanding the profound attributes of Shiva described in the verses. Today, Rudrashtakam remains a cornerstone of Shiva worship and a beloved hymn for millions. Its timeless verses, describing Shiva as the formless, omnipresent, compassionate, yet fierce destroyer of evil and ignorance, resonate deeply with seekers of spiritual truth. It continues to be a powerful tool for meditation, self-reflection, and cultivating a deeper connection with the divine. Its inclusion in the Ramcharitmanas further cements its place in the broader Hindu literary and devotional landscape, ensuring its preservation and continued relevance across generations. Modern adaptations include musical renditions by various artists, making it accessible to a wider audience while preserving its authentic spiritual essence.

(Hindi)
