    📖 Original Lyrics(Bengali · Bengali script)

    Hindi (Devanagari)

    English Translation

The lotus feet of Nitai (Nityananda) are as cool as millions of moons, Under whose shade the entire universe finds solace. O brother, without such a Nitai, one cannot attain Radha-Krishna; Therefore, firmly grasp the feet of Nitai. One who has no connection with Him, his life has passed in vain; He is like a wicked animal. One who does not utter Nitai's name, being absorbed in worldly pleasures, What will his education or lineage do for him? Being intoxicated by false ego, forgetting Nitai's feet, He speaks all sorts of impossible things. Considering material happiness as insignificant, he serves by holding Nitai's feet; He considers material happiness as insignificant. By Nitai's mercy, one will attain Radha-Krishna in Vraja; Therefore, hold on to Nitai's two feet. Lochan says, without Nitai, everything appears dark; Lochan says, without Nitai.

The translation aims for literal accuracy while preserving the devotional sentiment and poetic flow. 'Nitai' refers to Lord Nityananda. Stanza breaks are maintained for clarity.

    🧾 Contributor Notes

“Nitai Pada Kamala” is a foundational kirtan (devotional song) in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, composed by the revered 16th-century Bengali poet and saint, Lochan Das Thakur. Born in Kogram, West Bengal, Lochan Das was a direct disciple of Narahari Sarkar, one of the associates of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. His compositions, primarily in Bengali, are celebrated for their profound devotional sentiment and their ability to convey complex theological concepts in simple, accessible language. This particular kirtan emerged during a vibrant period of the Bhakti movement in Bengal, following the advent of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu, emphasizing the paramount importance of Nityananda's mercy for spiritual advancement. The kirtan holds immense cultural and spiritual significance within Gaudiya Vaishnavism, particularly in Bengal and among global Hare Krishna communities. It extols the glories of Lord Nityananda, who is considered the most merciful incarnation of Godhead (Balarama) and the original spiritual master (guru-tattva). The central theme is that without the grace and connection to Nityananda Prabhu, it is impossible to attain the ultimate goal of Gaudiya Vaishnavism: the loving service of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan. It is frequently sung during daily aratis, congregational chanting (sankirtan), and especially during festivals such as Gaura Purnima (Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's appearance day) and Nityananda Trayodashi (Nityananda Prabhu's appearance day), serving as a constant reminder of the spiritual master's indispensable role. “Nitai Pada Kamala” is typically performed in the traditional kirtan style, often as a call-and-response between a lead singer and a chorus of devotees. The primary instruments accompanying the singing are the mridanga (a two-headed clay drum) and kartals (small hand cymbals), which provide the rhythmic foundation, sometimes augmented by harmonium or other melodic instruments. The performance style is characterized by its heartfelt emotion, rhythmic energy, and the collective participation of the devotees, creating an atmosphere of spiritual ecstasy. It is sung by devotees of all ages and backgrounds, from seasoned renunciates to young children, in temples, ashrams, and homes worldwide. Today, “Nitai Pada Kamala” continues to be a cornerstone of Gaudiya Vaishnava devotional practice, offering spiritual solace and guidance to millions. Its timeless message of humility, surrender to the guru, and the pursuit of divine grace remains highly relevant in contemporary spiritual life. Efforts to preserve this kirtan involve its inclusion in kirtan books, digital archives, and continuous oral transmission through congregational singing and teaching. It stands as a testament to Lochan Das Thakur's poetic genius and the enduring power of the Bhakti tradition to inspire profound spiritual transformation.

(Hindi)
